Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
This is my favorite spaghetti recipe. It makes a huge pot so there are lots of leftovers.
I use leftovers to make chicken parmesan, lasagna, and other dishes.
Spaghetti with Meat Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage – sweet
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil
- 1 large onion – diced
- 1 large green pepper – diced
- 1 large red pepper – diced
- 4 cloves garlic – minced
- 2 large zucchini – grated
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 pinch cayenne pepper
- 2 28 oz cans crushed tomatoes
- 1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
- 1 12 oz can tomato paste
- 1/4 cup sugar
- pasta – based on the servings you want
Instructions
- In a large dutch oven, cook the beef and Italian sausage over medium heat until well browned. Transfer the meat to a large bowl and set aside.
- Add cooking oil to the dutch oven and heat over medium heat. Add the onion, green bell peppers, red bell peppers, and garlic. Saute about 7 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
- Add the zucchini and saute another 3 to 5 minutes.
- Add the meat back to the dutch oven.
- Stir in the oregano, salt, black pepper and red pepper. and cook for 3 minutes.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato paste and sugar. Stir thoroughly and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat and simmer for an hour or two.
- Cook pasta according to the package directions. Drain the pasta.
- Serve the sauce over the hot pasta.
