Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce

A basic cranberry sauce.  Adding an orange adds a nice citrus taste.

Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 orange - chopped into small pieces
  • 1 12-oz bag cranberries - fresh or frozen
  • nutmeg and cardamon - optional, see notes

Instructions

  • Rinse and drain cranberries.
  • Using a medium saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil.
  • Add the orange pieces and the cranberries and return to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer gently for 10 or 15 minutes.  Gently stir a couple of times while simmering.
  • Using a small bowl pour the cranberry sauce into the bowl and cover with plastic wrap.
  • Cool until near room temperature, then refrigerate until you are ready to serve.

Notes

Adding 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon of cardamon while boiling the sugar and water gives a light holiday spice to the sauce.

    Hi! I tried the holiday spice version with a variation today. I didn’t have cardamom. So I used allspice instead. Yum!
